An Introduction to Mathematical Analysis
Published in Hardcover by Harcourt / Academic Press (April, 1997)
Average review score:

First Rate!H. S. Bear seems to be one of the best kept secrets around. His writing in general is superb. This book is a well organized first course in analysis broken into digestible chunks and surprisingly thorough. It covers the basic topics and then introduces the reader to complex analysis and later to Lebesque integration.

Investing Under Fire: Winning Strategies from the Masters for Bulls, Bears, and the Bewildered
Published in Hardcover by Bloomberg Pr (June, 2003)
Average review score:

Wonderful OverviewThis is a great book. A must for anyone who wants to understand the current state of the U.S. economy and the global economy. I have seen Alan Ackerman on T.V. a few times and always enjoyed his advice.
The book is well done and the roster of contributors is very impressive. I cannot recall a book that had such a wide and important variety of industry leaders and analysts.
There were so many interesting and important points that it is difficult to mention them all. In short, the book is cautiously optimistic and is a must have for anyone who wants to be prepared for the future.

It's My Birthday
Published in School & Library Binding by Putnam Pub Group Juv (September, 1988)
Average review score:

A lovely little bookOn Bear's fourth birthday, his grandparents visit and give him his own photograph album. Bear sees photos of his parents before he was born; his expectant mother; himself shortly after birth; and other happy family events through his third birthday, when he had chicken pox. Yasuo Ohtomo illustrated this family of anthropomorphous bears by sketching thin black ink outlines and coloring them with delicately shaded pencil marks. My favorite illustration is a tender scene of the mother holding her nursing infant Bear. My four year old son was a bit puzzled by the illustration that shows one year old Bear with a pillow tied to his back "to help him walk"---he was satisfied when I explained that the book was originally intended for a Japanese audience, and that people all over the word have different parenting practices. A lovely little book.

Jack in Search of Art
Published in Paperback by Roberts Rinehart Pub (30 October, 2001)
Average review score:

A wonderful book about the world of artI am a preschool teacher and love the fundamental concept behind this book! Teaching children to see art in the world around them is so fundamental to early and continued learning. The bear in this story is like many of my students, not realizing that art is all around us! Combined with many open-ended hands on art projects in the classroom, this book serves as a super teaching tool to further the creative and expressive thinking of my students!

Jefferson's Memorandum Books
Published in Hardcover by Princeton Univ Pr (07 July, 1997)
Average review score:

A Marvel of Editing!Jefferson's Memorandum Books are a marvel in themselves, but even more so with the editing work of Bear and Stanton. The Memorandum Books are transcribed to offer the reader Jefferson's records on money spent travelling from DC back to Monticello (p. 1094), the efficiency of one- vs. two-wheeled wheelbarrows (p. 282), or his early legal notations. But what makes this work invluable is the wealth of information that the editors have packed into the footnotes about everything from Jefferson's personal relationships at the time of an entry, to the location of a road or river he mentions, to whatever can be known about a slave paid for running an errand. To make the 1419 page (with footnotes) Jefferson document usable, the editors constructed a 203 page index to make the Memorandum Books as useful a tool as they could be. The scholarly apparatus here makes this publication a source for historians of just about anything, from the local to the national economy, slave life at Monticello and Virginia, the environment, and, of course, Thomas Jefferson. The only problem with the books is the price tag, which will inhibit many who don't have institutional support for their research tools.

Jenny Bradford's Designs for Teddy Bears (Milner Craft Series)
Published in Paperback by Sterling Publications (March, 1997)
Average review score:

Informative and InspiringI am an avid bear maker with mountains of mohair in my back room. Living in the country, there can be a sense of isolation when it comes to crafts. In this book Jenny takes you step-by-step through the making of several different types of bears, from the basic to the more advanced, with bear embroidery, cross stitch and applique to boot. The diagrams are clear and explicit, the directions concise and very easy to follow, and the colour photos will entice and motivate. It is like having a friend in the same room as you.
